We've all heard the rave regarding high thread counts. We seem to have concluded that a high thread count is a sign of luxury and quality, but is this really the case?
To give a little background, thread count refers to the number of horizontal and vertical threads per square inch of fabric. Thread counts for bed sheets typically range from 200 - 800, although you will occasionally see manufacturers claiming numbers over 1,000. There are many factors that play a part in determining thread count.
Many manufacturers will use multiple-ply threads, such as 2-ply or even up to 4-ply. They will then claim the thread count of their sheets to be doubled to quadrupled. Using these techniques saves the manufacturer production costs but leaves the consumer with a less desirable product. This is the reason we see a multitude of supposedly "high thread count" sets at such low prices. So when searching for new bed sheets, be wary of sets claiming to be "1,000" thread count as they most likely truly only 250TC or 500TC. These sheets will often feel of lesser quality than a basic 180TC set not using these techniques.
When shopping around for sheets, if you notice high thread count sheets at low prices you should be wary of the quality. As we have determined, thread count is not a good indication of quality and comfort. Searching for brands that provide quality sheet sets without any gimmicks is a good place to start. If the price is too good to be true, it probably is.
